Josefina's Story

Grab some tissues, the video you’re about to enjoy will tug at your heart!

Andrea, one of our YWAM staff in Tijuana, met Josefina Ochoa when she was desperate. Living in substandard housing and unable to provide food for her children, Josefina was scavenging for discarded scraps at a street market. Andrea gave her what little money she had, thinking it was just a drop in a bucket. But Josefina’s little boy lit up and said, “Now we can buy something to eat!”

After learning more about the family, Andrea encouraged them to apply to the Homes of Hope program, YWAM’s housing ministry for the poor. Trico Homes donated the funds for the supplies and a team of students from the Shulich School in Calgary came to build them a new home.

The video above is just a part of the story. During the house dedication ceremony, Josefina said, “Let my family be a blessing to everyone like we’ve been blessed.” She then asked if it would be okay if she took a portion of the groceries they received and give them to the other families she met while scavenging at the markets.
